چکیده

Scale-up and design parameters have been investigated in 5 liters rotating drum bioreactors. System applies for animal feed production from cassava waste material using solid-state fermentation. The course of fermentation was 96 hours and all parameters related to microbial growth were measured every 12 hours namely glucosamine content, %urea, %protein, % carbohydrate, and %fat. The solid was turned every time before the sampling to remove excess heat and prevent overheating of the system. Bed temperature was on-line measured and found to be the highest at 36-44 C after 12-24 hours fermentation depending on the substrate loading. Moisture content was slightly increased from approximately 49% to 57% during the fermentation course. At 96 hours, the lowest substrate loading of 200g gives the highest glucosamine content, 35 mg/g, and crude protein, 23%. In contrast, the lowest glucosamine content of 10 mg/g, and crude protein of 21% were found when the highest substrate 500 g was loaded. Similar results were also found for %urea, %protein, and %fat analysis.

A Scale-up Design Procedure for Rotating Biological Contactors

A scale-up design procedure, based on a new physical mass transfer (PMT) model, whichdescribes the performance, for aerobic rotating biological contactors (RBC’s) is developed. This scale-up procedure can be used to determine the disc surface area needed to prevent an oxygen limitation or to obtain a specific degree of treatment. In contrast to the empirical, and most previous RBC performance m...

Mixing Studies in Loop Bioreactors for Production of Biomass from Natural Gas

The mixing behavior of the gas-liquid phase in three loop bioreactors was investigated. A gas-induced External Airlift Loop Bioreactor (EALB), a forced-liquid Vertical Tubular Loop Bioreactor (VTLB) and a forced-liquid Horizontal Tubular Loop Bioreactor (HTLB) were used for mixing studies as well as biomass production from natural gas. The effect of design parameters, riser to downcomer cro...

Mixed Solid-State Fermentation

A soft-sphere discrete particle model was used to simulate mixing behavior of solid substrate particles in a slow rotating drum for solid-state fermentation. In this approach, forces acting on and subsequent motion of individual particles can be predicted. The (2D) simulations are qualitatively and quantitatively validated by mixing experiments using video and image analysis techniques. It was ...

Development and Automation of Microturbulence Intensifying Systems and Biosynthesis Conditions in Bioreactors

Results of the investigation applying newly developed methods: a Stirring Intensity Measuring Device (SIMD), a counterflow mixing system, identification of the state of turbohypobiosis, counterflow bioreactor’s design and a process controller BIO-3 have been analysed. Special attention has been given to the phenomena on the liquid-cell interface area. A combination of the above-mentioned method...

Focusing on the Optimization for Scale up in Airlift Bioreactors and the Production of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii as a Model Microorganism

The aim of this work is to use optimization as a tool for scale up in airlift bioreactors and apply this approach to a real life process. To put this approach into practice, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, a green microalgae, was used as a model microorganism. The effects of the design parameters on the performance of the bioreactors were monitored through the changes in mixing and circulation times...
